Miyama Town, located in the central part of Kyoto Prefecture, is home to traditional thatched-roof houses. While Shirakawa-go and Gokayama's gassho-style villages are more famous for their thatched roofs, Miyama also preserves some of these rare structures. Maintaining thatched roofs requires rethatching every few decades, and due to a severe shortage of skilled craftsmen, the local community has established a "Preservation Society" to focus on upkeep and tourism promotion. In 1993, Miyama was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government.

Because thatched-roof houses are vulnerable to fire, fire prevention drills are conducted twice a year, in spring and autumn, to test fire-fighting equipment. During these drills, many tourists come to witness the village-wide water spray. In autumn, visitors can enjoy the beautiful fall foliage; in winter, the snow-covered landscape; and in spring, the blooming cherry blossoms and other spring flowers. Traveling by private car is the most convenient way to get there. Beyond the mountains, you’ll find other charming villages, so be sure to visit at least once.
